WhatsApp New Features August 2026 - @all Tag, Poll Upgrades & Usernames Explained

WhatsApp rolled out one of its biggest group-chat refreshes in years on 4 August 2026, followed by a wider set of privacy and AI updates through the month. If your app is showing new poll options or an unfamiliar "@all" tag, here's exactly what changed and how to use each feature.

1. @all Mentions — Tag the Whole Group Instantly

Instead of typing every member's name to get everyone's attention, you can now type @all in any group chat to notify all members at once. In groups with more than 32 members, this is restricted to admins only — so regular members in large groups won't see this option, which helps prevent notification spam.

2. Poll Upgrades — Three New Options

• Hidden voter names: Poll creators can now hide who voted for what, encouraging more honest responses on sensitive questions.
• End time for voting: Set a deadline after which the poll automatically locks — useful for planning events where you need a final headcount by a certain time.
• Editable polls: You can now edit a poll's question or options for up to 15 minutes after sending, so a typo doesn't mean starting over.

3. Create a New Group From an Existing One

You can now spin off a new group chat using members from an existing group, without adding each person manually. Useful when a side conversation — planning a surprise, coordinating a sub-team — shouldn't clutter the main group.

4. WhatsApp Usernames — Coming Soon

The biggest long-term change: WhatsApp is rolling out a username system so you no longer need to share your phone number to chat with someone new. Users can already reserve a preferred username ahead of the full rollout. Businesses and creators can claim the same username they use on Instagram or Facebook, if available.

Note: Usernames are currently only accessible through the WhatsApp mobile app, not desktop or web.

5. AI Writing Help & Photo Editing

• AI reply suggestions: When someone asks a question, WhatsApp's AI can draft short, detailed, formal, or casual reply options based on the conversation — you pick or edit before sending.
• AI photo editing before sending: Attach a photo, tap the edit button, and new AI-powered editing tools appear alongside the usual crop/text/sticker options.

Meta states these AI features use your chat context to generate suggestions, but messages remain end-to-end encrypted.

6. Voice Message Transcripts

Turn any voice note into readable text — useful when you can't play audio (in a meeting, a quiet space, or a noisy commute). Enable it via:
