Eligibility Basics
- Qualification: Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university
- Age: 21–32 years for General category, with standard category relaxations
- Attempts: 6 for General, 9 for OBC, unlimited (within age limit) for SC/ST
- Final-year students can apply, provided they produce proof of passing before Mains
The Three-Stage Structure
- Prelims (screening only): Two objective papers — GS Paper I (merit-deciding) and CSAT Paper II (qualifying at 33%). Prelims marks do NOT count toward your final rank.
- Mains (2,350 marks total): Nine descriptive papers including Essay, four GS papers, two Optional subject papers, and two qualifying language papers.
- Personality Test/Interview: Final stage, combined with Mains marks to determine your rank and service allocation.
A Realistic First-Year Preparation Plan
- Months 1–3: Build your foundation with NCERTs (Class 6–12) for History, Geography, Polity, Economy. Start a daily newspaper habit — one reliable national daily, focused on editorials and policy news.
- Months 4–6: Move to standard reference books subject-wise. Choose your Optional subject and begin it in parallel — don't postpone this decision.
- Months 7–9: Begin answer-writing practice for Mains. This is where most aspirants underprepare — knowing content and being able to write 150-word structured answers under time pressure are different skills.
- Months 10–12: Full-length Prelims mock tests weekly, with rigorous analysis of every mistake. Revise rather than adding new sources.

JOIN NOWMistakes That Cost Aspirants a Year
- Collecting too many sources: Multiple books per subject creates the illusion of progress. One good source, revised five times, beats five sources read once.
- Delaying answer writing: Content knowledge without writing practice fails at Mains. Start writing within your first 6 months.
- Ignoring CSAT: It's only qualifying, but candidates do fail it — costing them the entire cycle despite a strong GS score.
- Rushing the DAF: Your service preference and cadre choices have decades-long career implications. Fill it thoughtfully, not in the final hour.
- No Plan B: With ~1,000 vacancies against 8 lakh applicants, having a parallel career track isn't pessimism — it's prudent planning.
⚠️ Be Careful with Coaching Promises
No coaching institute can guarantee selection — with roughly 0.1% of applicants ultimately selected, be skeptical of "guaranteed result" claims or heavily discounted "limited seats" pressure tactics. Many toppers have cleared CSE through self-study using freely available NCERTs and standard books. Choose paid resources based on genuine need, not fear.
