Events in Assam
Assam — and Guwahati in particular — has become one of India's most active sporting hubs outside the metros, hosting international badminton, ISL football, IPL cricket, and national-level athletics. If you're a sports fan in the Northeast looking to attend live events rather than just watch on TV, here's what's coming up.
🏸 Guwahati Masters 2026 — Badminton
| Dates | 1–6 December 2026 |
| Level | BWF Tour Super 100 |
| Prize Money | USD 120,000 |
| Venue | Sarusajai Sports Complex, Guwahati |
| Events | Men's & Women's Singles, all three Doubles categories |
Now in its fourth edition, the Guwahati Masters draws around 450+ international shuttlers each year and gives Assamese players like Isharani Baruah and Arijit Chaliha a home stage. The prize pool has grown every year since its 2023 debut, and it's the most accessible way in the Northeast to watch world-ranked badminton live.
⚽ NorthEast United FC — ISL Home Matches
The Highlanders play their home fixtures at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium (Sarusajai Stadium) in Guwahati — a 21,600-capacity ground that has recorded crowds of over 32,000 for big matches. NorthEast United has been the region's flagship professional club since 2014, and the stadium also hosts India national football team fixtures periodically.
Check the official ISL fixture list for the current season's home match dates, as the schedule is released and revised through the season.
🏏 IPL at Barsapara — Cricket
Guwahati's Barsapara Cricket Stadium has become a regular IPL venue, hosting Rajasthan Royals home fixtures in recent seasons — including season-opening matches. Domestic cricket and international fixtures are also periodically allotted here by the BCCI.
🏃 Guwahati Half Marathon
Organised annually by the student body of IIT Guwahati as part of their Techniche festival, this road race has been running since 2009 and typically features 21 km and 6 km categories. It regularly draws 1,500+ participants from across the city and is open to amateur runners, not just competitive athletes.
🎪 Brahmaputra Beach Festival
Held each January on the Brahmaputra riverbanks to coincide with Magh Bihu, this festival combines traditional Assamese sports, music, dance, and crafts. It's less about elite competition and more about indigenous games and local culture — worth attending if you want something distinctly Assamese rather than a standard sporting event.

Assam's Sporting Legacy
Assam hosted the Khelo India Youth Games in 2020, drawing around 10,000 athletes across 20 sports — a landmark moment for Northeast sports infrastructure. The state has also produced athletes of national stature, most notably sprinter Hima Das, who lit the torch at those Games. With the revamped Khelo India Scheme now backed by a ₹36,441 crore outlay, the region is likely to see continued investment in facilities and talent identification programs.
⚠️ Always Confirm Dates Before Travelling
Sporting schedules shift — fixtures get rescheduled, venues change, and tickets sell out fast for popular events. Confirm dates and ticket availability through official sources (BWF, ISL, BCCI, or the event organiser) before making travel plans, especially if coming from outside Guwahati.
