TAMIL NADU TEACHER EXAM
TNTET
Complete Guide

The Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test (TNTET) is the mandatory qualifying exam for anyone seeking to teach Classes 1 to 8 in government and government-aided schools across Tamil Nadu. Conducted by the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) Tamil Nadu, TNTET is now held multiple times a year — including a dedicated session for working teachers who haven't yet cleared it.

This guide covers the exam structure, eligibility, and how to track upcoming sessions, since TRB's exam calendar has expanded in recent cycles.

Exam Structure — Paper 1 vs Paper 2

  • Paper I: For candidates aiming to teach Primary Level, Classes 1–5
  • Paper II: For candidates aiming to teach Upper Primary Level, Classes 6–8
  • Both papers are conducted offline, OMR-based, available in Tamil and English
  • Candidates can appear for both papers to maximize eligibility across grade levels

Special TET for Working Teachers

TRB runs a dedicated Special TET specifically for in-service teachers appointed on or before a set cutoff date who have not yet cleared TET. This is separate from the regular TNTET cycle and matters for career progression and continued eligibility within the school system. Applications are accepted online only — no offline submissions.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the official TRB portal: trb.tn.gov.in
  2. Find the current TNTET or Special TET notification link
  3. Register and fill in personal, academic, and category details
  4. Upload required documents and pay the application fee
  5. Submit before the deadline — TRB has stated no changes are allowed once the window closes

Why TNTET Matters Beyond a One-Time Requirement

  • Required for direct recruitment into Tamil Nadu government and aided school teaching posts
  • Increasingly relevant for career progression and promotions for existing teachers, not just new applicants
  • Now offered in multiple sessions per year — reducing the wait for candidates who miss one cycle
  • Separate TRB recruitment exams (like PG Assistant recruitment) may reference or require TET qualification alongside their own selection process

⚠️ Only Trust the Official TRB Portal

Applications, admit cards, and results are only valid through trb.tn.gov.in. Be cautious of unofficial "TNTET registration" links or third parties charging extra fees for what should be a free, direct TRB application process.
