Class 10 & 12
Nearly 45 lakh students across 204 subjects in India and 26 countries will appear for CBSE Class 10 and 12 board exams this session — and this year brings the most significant structural changes in years. Here's what's officially confirmed and what to expect from the date sheet timeline.
What's Changed This Session
- Class 10 exams twice a year: Students can appear once or both times within the same academic session to improve their score — a first for CBSE Class 10
- Class 12 remains single annual exam — no change to the existing once-a-year format
- New 9-point grading scale replaces the older 5-level scale; the top 12.5% of students will receive an 'A1' grade
- 4 new skill-based subjects added for Class 12: Land Transport System, Electronics and Hardware, Physical Activity Trainer, and Design Thinking & Innovation
- Competency-Based Education focus — greater emphasis on problem-solving and conceptual understanding over rote memorization
Expected Timeline
| Exam Form Filling | Expected to begin October 2026 |
| Date Sheet Release | Expected late November – December 2026 |
| Practical Exams | Expected November/December 2026 – January/February 2027 (varies by school) |
| Theory Exams Begin | Expected mid-February 2027 |
| Class 10 Second Exam | Expected May–June 2027 (for those opting in) |
CBSE has not officially released the date sheet yet. Based on historical pattern, it typically comes 70-90 days before exams begin — expect an announcement in the last week of November or first week of December 2026.
Should Class 10 Students Attempt Both Exams?
The twice-a-year system is optional, not mandatory — students can choose to appear once (like the traditional system) or attempt both and keep their better score. This is designed to reduce single-exam pressure, but it also means more total preparation time invested if a student opts for both attempts. Discuss with your school and teachers whether the second attempt makes sense for your specific situation, rather than assuming it's automatically beneficial for everyone.
